Heritage Open Days 2018

Thurs 6 & Fri 7 Sept 2018 | 10am, 12pm & 2pm daily

Take a free guided tour of the theatre as part of Heritage Open Days 2018!

The historic Grade I listed Tyne Theatre & Opera House, was built in 1867 and designed by W.B. Parnell for industrialist and politician Joseph Cowen. With its lavish auditorium, outstanding acoustics and Victorian understage machinery, the Tyne Theatre produced entertainment that amazed the audiences of the time and brought them back asking for more.

Guides from the Preservation Trust will set the historical scene before taking you into the beautiful auditorium, on to the stage, and then below the stage to see the carefully restored Victorian stage machinery. Your guide will explain how this was used to produce amazing theatrical effects.
